Many people and dogs love their crate, and some think its cruel putting a dog in a crate / prison / cage, call it what you want. But personally if you are not in a position to keep an eye on what your pup is up to then it is the safest place for them to be - WHEN THEY ARE INTRODUCED TO IT CORRECTLY!
The crate can be a place of safety for your pup in the strange big wide world it now finds itself in, and can help you in prevent behavioural issues developing.
Whilst we put our pups in their crate for our benefit (to prevent issues, such as chewing, toileting etc, it should be thought of as being to their benefit.
The single biggest reason for using a crate is to structure the process of housetraining, closely followed by controlling their chewing, with suitable chew toys in a secure environment.
It’s also keeping the pup safe from certain household objects, such as a cable dangling down from the iron on top of the ironing board, and various household chemicals and cleaners that could cause harm to them.
The most important thing to remember when crate training your pup is never to use the crate as a tool for punishment. It should be a pleasant place for the pup to go, and feel confident and happy in doing so, thus reducing the likelihood of issues such as separation anxiety, as the crate becomes an area where your dog is happy, and calm when left alone in it.
Dog Crates
Most crates are lightweight but strong wire mesh construction, providing a good secure environment, but not so heavy it can’t be moved from room to room. You can even find ones that can be used in the home and also in the rear of your car to keep pup safe during travel.
