The Top 10 Things to remember when getting your dog to come when called!
1. No matter how long it takes to get your dog back to you when you call it - YOU HAVE TO PRAISE AND REWARD. If they sense you are angry when they arrive back, thats the slipery slope to bad recall.
2. Always reward the recall with something the dog wants - Tasty Food, Toy, Game or just a happy face and some fuss.
3. Only call your dog if you can be sure its going to come.
4. Always use an excited voice when calling your dog, make it a joy for your dog
5. Do not simply use the dogs name to get it to come back to you. Use its name for attention, and then use your recall command - COME or HERE.
6. Start your recall on a short lead in the house, before you progress to a long lead or long line outside, DO NOT RUN BEFORE YOU CAN WALK!
7. When you call your dog and get the response you are looking for then you need to LET IT GO AGAIN ! You need to be doing this about 90% of the time.
8. If you are unsure if your dog is going to come back when you let it off - DONT LET IT OFF (Use a long line trailing on the floor, so that you can stand on it to stop them running further away).
9. Do not progress to your next stage of recall until the previous one has been successful.
