Just how rewarding are you to your dog ?
Ever wondered why your dog does not come when called? After all you've taught it to 'come' !!
Saturday was our first Recall Workshop to go into a bit more detail on questions such as:-
- Why should my dog come when its called?
- Why won't my dog come when I call it?
In reality, if our dogs do not come when they are called, its no one else's fault but ours.
We have not trained the recall command properly, we have not made coming to us more rewarding than the mischief they want to get up to, and we have not prevented it happening. So when they next take off after a rabbit, another dog or person ask yourself these questions....
Have I taught my dog properly to come when I call him / her?
Have I prevented my dog from ignoring my call for him / her to come back ?
Have I made the return to me rewarding for my dog?
You only have to answer No to one of those questions and you can see why its not working.
TRAINING the recall
You may trained and got a reliable recall in the home, puppy training classes and indeed in the garden, but have you trained it out on a walk ?
PREVENTION of the recall not happening
If you have not trained your dog in numerous different areas to come when called are you using a long line / long lead, to stop your dog going wrong?
REWARD the recall
Every time you pop the lead back on your dog is that the end of their fun? Do you reward them sufficiently for coming to you ? Is your reward more enticing than chasing the local wildlife.
