When it comes to our work life, we don't get extra for doing what is expected now do we ?
So why in dog training are there so many people bribing their dogs just to do the basic weeks work ?
I am of course referring to the over use of food in the training of our canine friends. The dog sits - it gets a food reward, the dog stays it gets a food reward, the dog comes when its called - you get the message !
Why do Instructors and trainers use extra food to get our dogs to do the basics ? Because it looks good, and gives good results in a very short space of time (assuming the dog is hungry).
I contacted a week or three ago now a company that offers residential training to ask why all their videos showed trainers with food ? and Why they train with food, they couldn't answer!! Now the site of a big bulging bag of cooked chicken and cheese hanging off of someones belt would even get me doing some tricks, but in essence they are being paid overtime for not actually doing ANYTHING more than their basic job - As they are told.
Basic salary for our dogs should be a quality meal and good exercise with a good dash of play during the day. For that basic salary, we should expect our dog to sit, come when called, not pull on a lead, go to bed when told, not barge through doors, not jump on the furniture and so on.
TREATS should be for TRICKS or as I call it 'OVERTIME' anything out of the ordinary for our dogs to learn, but not a basic weeks work.
If you would like to teach your dog a basic weeks work for a basic rewarding salary, with no added crap, then feel free to get in touch, or have a look at our facebook page to see the dozens of people that are already having success with our methods.
