If you're looking to get a dog from the gundog classification, ie Labrador, Springer Spaniel, Cocker Spaniel, etc, or any of the crosses of the same, from a breeder of working dogs.
Spend a moment and ponder on this....
You want to buy a working dog, from a line of dogs that have been bred to do a specific job, meaning they are higher drive than your run of the mill dog.
So, what are you going to do to replace that dogs 'Work'?
If you are going to walk it for two hours a day, think again, that's only going to make it fitter. What are you going to do to challenge it and mentally stimulate it ?
If you think you are going to be able to train a gundog breed with copious amounts of cooked chicken or liver cake just to sit in your kitchen or at the local dog training class. How are you going to make yourself more value to your dog than the local wildlife when its out in the real world where it is meant to be 'employed' finding and flushing game ?
If you go to a gun dog breeder and they don't ask you more questions than you ask them, are they really looking for the best home? Or the best price? for their puppies?
We are seeing an increasing number of gundog breeds coming in for training on recall and loose lead walking, having been failed due to the lack of understanding of what the dog needs to keep its brain stimulated.
With the following similarities in the majority of cases:-
"6 Weeks of food based training in a hall "
"I was told not to feed my dog before class"
"No advice on how we are going to wean them off and get the same response outside in the real world"
"My Dog was brilliant in the classes"
"We were not allowed hands on the dogs"
"It felt like all I was doing for the hour was feeding my dog"
And too much other crap to list.
Squirty Cheese and Liver Cake or anything like that WILL work in a hall with no distractions.
But out in the real world? NAH, not going to happen
Build a positive relationship with your dog from the off, and you wont have to bribe it to do anything for you!
Don't get me wrong, food does have a place in dog training, but not before you have built a good bond with your dog!
