When should I start training my puppy?
As soon as you get them home. Most puppies come away from their mothers at around 8-10 weeks. This is the most important time for getting the basics into your puppy, in terms of basic commands.
Its also very important to expose your puppy to as many different people, things etc in this time as possible. In fact we can help you with a checklist for that.
Are the classes full of dogs and People?
So that we can be sure of giving you the very best in training and socialisation for you and your puppy we encourage owners to take classes with other dogs and people.
However, we understand that large groups can be too much for some dogs and trainers, therefore we keep classes indoors, and to a maximum of 6-8 handlers and dogs, so they aren't overwhelming for anyone.
What methods of training do you use?
We use a mix of methods that very much depend on the breed, and the capabilities of the owner. With the emphasis of getting the pup or adult dog into a position of success as soon as possible. Praise and Play being the reward for the dogs, we will not use food for any of our puppy classes.
Why do you not use food?
Using food from the start gets results, no doubt about it, but they dont last, and dogs will soon train you to be shoving food in them at every available opportunity. We use praise and play in all our puppy classes, which promotes a much healthier bond between your playful pup and you. BUILD THE BOND NOT THE BELLY!
Where do you train?
Here in Ashill, Norfolk. IP25 7DB. We have both heated indoor and over 2 acres of outdoor training area.
Will my puppy be offlead?
Only when the instructors say so, and not to play with other dogs. By allowing play between dogs in any environment, you are telling your puppy that you are not important and they should seek their fun from dogs. Your puppy should want to be with you, not other dogs.
You say we need to bring a smile and a sense of humour to classes, why?
To ensure a good learning environment for both you and your dog, its important we all enjoy it and have fun, if we find training our dogs fun and rewarding then we are going to want to do more of it. When you smile, your confidence grows and your dog picks up on this
Do I need to join a training class ?
No, of course you dont need to, but its a very good idea too, before your new dog picks up too many bad habits a GOOD puppy training class will have you working your dog, and helping you to get it right, from the beginning. Even if you do not come to us, look for a Professional Dog Trainer, someone that is a member of a well renowned and respected organisation such as the BIPDT. Classes are also good for perfect on lead socialisation, in a controlled and safe environment.
